| Subject : Number of Registered Patent and Design Rights of KOSDAQ Companies Greatly Reduced |

The number of registered domestic intellectual property rights of Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (KOSDAQ)-listed companies was greatly reduced last year. This would seem to imply that research and development (R&D) of small and medium-sized companies are in decline in the aftermath of the global financial crisis and the economic recession.
According to the KOSDAQ-listed Companies Association (KOSDAQCA) and the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), as of October 22, the number of registered domestic intellectual property rights of 1009 KOSDAQ-listed companies in 2008 is 4769, which is reduced by 12.5% in comparison to 5366 cases in 2007.
In particular, the number of registered patents for ensuring sole and exclusive rights for 20 years is reduced by 29.5% and the number of registered design rights for protecting design creativities such as unique shapes for 15 years is reduced by 40.5% in 2008 compared to in 2007.
As such, the total number of intellectual property rights held by KOSDAQ-listed companies is 33,523, that is, only 1.1% of the total number of registered intellectual property rights in Korea. The average number of patents held by KOSDAQ-listed companies is only 11.2. |
