a) The extract of Aralia cordata of the present invention has an effect of lowering the level of total cholesterol in blood serum by 20% or greater, increasing the level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol by 50% or greater, and decreasing the level of triglyceride by 20% or greater. b) The extract of Aralia cordata of the present invention has an effect of lowering the level of low-density cholesterol by 70% or greater and decreasing the atherosclerogenic index of the cholesterol in blood serum of the treated group by 50% or greater. c) The Aralia cordata extract treated group of the cholesterol-fed rats shows a remarkable effect of suppressing the accumulation of cholesterol which is checked by naked eyes and further shows an effect of preventing intimal thickening of the endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells of arterial wall.
