The increase in research on stem cell medicines in Korea led to a dramatic rise in patent applications in the field. The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced that there were 60 patent applications last year, which is 62% greater than the year before that (37 patent applications). Patents on stem cell medicines in Korea were first filed in 2002 and have increased gradually, now reaching a total of 281 patents. 63% of all patents on stem cell medicines were filed by Koreans. Universities and hospitals constitute 55%, small and mid-sized firms 28%, and large corporations only 1%.
