South Korea¡¯s LG Innotek Co. has sued Osram GmbH and Hella KGaA Hueck & Co. in China over light-emitting diode (LED) patent infringements, seeking compensation of damages and a sales ban on LED products sold in China by Osram¡¯s Chinese unit and Hella.
Hella is a German maker of auto components and it uses LED packages from Osram, a light-making unit of Germany-based Siemens AG.
The Korean company, an electronics parts-making unit of LG Group, accused Osram of infringing on its LED technologies, demanding a Beijing court ban sales of five LED products, including a car headlamp made by Hella.
China represents more than 30% of the global LED sales. Earlier, LG filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) against three affiliates of Osram. It also lodged a similar lawsuit with a Delaware court.
LG¡¯s latest move intensifies the patent war between Osram and Korean LED makers, which led to lawsuits in three countries that account for 90% of global LED demand.
In June, Osram accused LED-making units of Korea¡¯s two industrial giants, Samsung and LG, of infringing on its LED technologies and filed complaints with the U.S. ITC, a U.S. district court and a German court.
