Subject : Siemens Files Patent Suits against Samsung & LG Electronics
Date 2011-06-29 Visit 4654

German industrial group Siemens filed patent-infringement complaints against South Korea¡¯s Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics over its light-emitting diode (LED) technology.

According to the New York Times (NYT) on Monday, local time, Siemens claimed that Samsung and LG¡¯s German and U.S. branches infringed its LED lighting technology patent.

Siemens said the Korean companies used one of its patented LED lighting technologies that transforms blue light into white light, which is used in some flat-panel televisions and household LED light bulbs.

Siemens filed a German suit in Hamburg, while filing its complaints with the International Trade Commission based on Washington and U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Delaware. Reportedly, it is planning to file similar lawsuits in China and Japan, too.

The latest lawsuit is drawing much attention because Siemens is planning to sell off its stakes in Osram in three months. Osram, a subsidiary of Siemens is the world¡¯s second largest light bulb maker, and it is becoming an IPO in September.
