There has been a great increase in the number of patents filed on thin film solar cells in South Korea. This is especially the case for ¡®high efficiency¡¯ thin film solar cells, which shows a gradual rise in number.
The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) explained that there has been a total of 416 patents that have been filed on thin film solar cells since 2005 and that the number of applications have increased every year.
There were 35 such filings in 2007, which increased to 93 filings in 2009, and 122 filings in 122, demonstrating a rapid increase.
Joosung Engineering filed the most patents with 70 applications, constituting 17% of the total number.
LG Display came in second with 43 applications (10%), which was followed by LG Electronics with 36 applications (9%) and Hyosung with 17 applications (4%).
Number of patent filings regarding the realization of high efficiency thin film solar cells that utilize copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) technologies.
It shows a gradual rise, going from 4 cases in 2006, 6 cases in 2007, 13 cases in 2008, 26 cases in 2009, and 26 cases in 2010. |
