Subject : CIS/CIGS Solar Cells Key Patent Analysis
Date 2011-04-28 Visit 5356

Thanks to the global boom in the photovoltaic generation industry, the photovoltaic generation industry has grown over 30% for the last two to three years, and its future also look bright. However, the lack of poly-silicon, the original material, and the low cell conversion efficiency of solar cells result in higher installation cost, and therefore, the unit cost for photovoltaic generation is three to four times higher than other new renewable energy, and six to ten times higher than fossil energy. This makes it difficult for photovoltaic energy to be distributed rapidly.

To solve these issues and reduce the production cost of cells, solar cell manufacturers have been focusing on next-generation solar cells, such as CdTe solar cells, CIS/CIGS solar cells, and flexible thin film solar cells, which either minimize or do not use the use of Si material at all.

Among these solar cells, the CIS/CIGS solar cell technology is considered one to produce low-cost, high-efficient solar cells that can improve the economic performance of photovoltaic generation drastically and substituting for high-cost crystalline silicon solar cells that are currently being used, and therefore, this technology is being studied and developed in the USA, Japan, and Europe, among others.

Published a report on "CIS/CIGS Solar Cels' Key Patent Analysis," which performed an anlysis on the open/registered patents on WIPS DB in Korea, Japan, Euripe and the USA, which had been patented between July 29, 1974 and April 17, 2007, as well as INPADOC, G-PAT patent database.

This report categorized the CIS/CIGS solar cell technologies by nation, manufacturer, and key applicant, as well as by technology, such as light absorber layer, substrate, module, buffer layer, window layer, electrode, tandem, patterning, and compound thin film solar cells. Particularly, this report's merit is that because it analyzed the key CIS/CIGS solar cell patents applied by major manufacturers based on a flow chart by year, it allows to grasp at once the development direction of key technologies and patent content.
