Subject : Samsung Wins Spansion Patent Battle
Date 2011-03-29 Visit 4287

Samsung Electronics won a U.S. trade ruling in its battle with Spansion over alleged patent infringements.

U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) said that Spansion infringes a Samsung patent for a way of controlling the processes used to make the chips.

The two companies are competitors in the market for flash memory which are used to store images and music on portable devices. They have eight patent-infringement cases pending against each other.

In 2009, Spansion filed suit against Samsung, accusing it of infringing its patent rights but ITC did not accept it. Spansion is also in a patent battle with Apple and Research in Motion (RIM).

Samsung filed suit against Spansion, accusing the US company infringed two patents for its methods of making flash memory semiconductor chips.

The ITC decision is scheduled to be approved in June that will block the marketing of some flash memory chips by Spanson.

However, Spanson said it does not agree with the conclusions and ask for the full commission review, which will occur in the next couple of months.
