Samsung Electronics and the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) have agreed to cooperate with fostering so called "Appropriate Technology," which refers to "good technology" -- simple but hugely applicable invention using relatively small or recyclable resources thus making the most of current technologies for the underprivileged in the developing market. A host of successful cases are already available when you want to find out what the "Appropriate Technology" is like. Take a "Life Straw" for example. It's a personal, low-cost water purification tool in Africa that suffers from a shortage of water. A simple pedal pump for irrigation use is also one of products developed by using appropriate technology.
Under the agreement, Samsung Electronics will develop an appropriate technology through R&D and provide developing countries with the same.
The KIPO will offer Samsung an access to its database of patented technologies to help the company find information related to development of an appropriate technology. Samsung Electronics said that they will develop an excellent appropriate technology in combination of abundant patent information of the KIPO and their technical skills to help people in developing countries live in more comfortable circumstances.
