LG Electronics signed a cross-licensing agreement over digital TVs with Vizio. As patent disputes between the two companies have been settled, LG Electronics is expected to spur its expansion in the North American digital TV market. Both companies began the patent disputes over flat panel digital TVs in 2008.
LG Electronics announced that they signed a comprehensive cross-licensing agreement over digital TVs such as screen control and signal transmission technology with Vizio, the first American brand to lead in U.S. TV sales.
For the past two years, LG Electronics argued that they have the right to use signal processing technology for converting a received signal to a digital signal, and Vizio argued that they have the right to use signal correction technology for correcting a signal error.
This agreement has been made under mutual agreement after LG Electronics won last September the TV patent infringement suit that LG Electronics filed in the ITC. LG Electronics filed suit against Vizio for patent infringement and wanted the ITC to stop Vizio from importing TVs from Taiwan, etc., to the United States. Around 18 January on which the potential ITC ruling is expected, both companies have reached the agreement.
An official in the electronic industry says that the fact that the corresponding companies made an agreement ahead of the potential ITC ruling shows that TV-related technology and patent dispute resolution ways of LG Electronics have been recognized in the global market.
Vizio, the first American brand to lead in U.S. TV sales, has a 17 to 18 % market share in the U.S. that is the world¡¯s largest TV market and competes with Samsung for the No. 1 for several years. LG Electronics took the second place in the global TV market and is working hard to increase its market share in the U.S. |
