For improved business efficiency relating to the Madrid protocol, KIPO and WIPO will extend an electronic exchange of documents. Following the PCT-related documents, KIPO has also been electronically exchanging Madrid-related documents since June of this year. At the KIPO-WIPO high level meeting held last May, KIPO agreed to electronically send various documents under the Madrid Protocol to the International Bureau of the WIPO. So far, a total of 3,581 documents have been sent electronically to WIPO. Prior to this, KIPO has been electronically exchanging priority documents for international patent applications with WIPO since September 2004. In addition, during his visit to the 48th WIPO General Assemblies Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, on Wednesday September 22, the Commissioner of KIPO, Lee Soowon, signed an MOU with the Director General of WIPO, Francis Gurry and accordingly made an official basis for further extension of electronic exchange of Madrid Protocol-related documents between both offices. With this agreement on the electronic exchange of international trademark documents, the majority of documents between KIPO and WIPO will be electronically processed. We expect this to greatly reduce the cost and time andenlarge cooperation with WIPO. |
