According to an announcement made by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), there have been 188 patents filed since 2004 regarding mobile SNS technologies.
There were 9 cases in 2006, 27 cases in 2007, 80 cases in 2008, and 40 cases in 2009.
However, there have been 22 cases so far this year, illustrating increased interest in SNS-related technologies.
Korean entities/individuals have filed 133 patents and foreigners have filed 55 patents.
Samsung Electronics filed 21 patents, followed by LG Electronics with 17 patents, KT with 15 patents, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) with 14 patents, SK Telecom with 10 patents, Yahoo with 10 patents, and Google with 7 patents.
Heightened competition among leading companies is expected and a continued rise in number of patents filed regarding the industry is expected as well.
