According to an announcement made by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), there has been a recent rise in the number of patent applications regarding satellite launch vehicles. KIPO found that there were a total of 1,280 patent applications regarding satellite launching filed by the United States, Japan, European Union (EU), and South Korea. The number of patent applications filed in 2004 was 60, which increased to 131 in 2005 and more than 80 a year since. The low number in early 2000s was due to reduced government budget in major space-exploring countries after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1990s. However, this number rose once the United States increased its budget after 2005 and other countries followed the US¡¯s lead. The US filed 601 patent applications (47%), Japan 367 patent applications (29%), EU 169 patent applications (13%), and South Korea 143 patent applications (11%). Contrary to the consistent patent applications filed by the other three countries since 1990s, South Korea filed most of its patent applications in the new millennium (114 patents). This is most likely owing to an increase in the citizens¡¯ interests in space and bold investment of the government. |
