The University of New Mexico (UNM) sued Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), alleging a patent infringement of its invention that improves the capability of semiconductor manufacturers to fabricate next generation chips.
A complaint was filed on 23 June, 2010 requesting that the US International Trade Commission (ITC) starts an investigation into TSMC and Samsung’s importation of infringing products, which constitutes unfair methods of competition and unfair acts under the patent laws.
If Samsung Electronics is deemed to have infringed on the UNM’s patent, Samsung Electronics’ semiconductors may stop being imported by the US, which means a great economic impact on the Korean economy.
UNM’s complaint identifies TSMC and Samsung as infringing its US Patent No. 6,042,998, titled “Method and Apparatus for Extending Spatial Frequencies in Photolithography Images.”
It was developed by several researches pertaining to lithographic methods that allow for the production of smaller features in semiconductor devices.
As critical dimensions within chips become smaller and smaller, in accordance with Moore’s Law, the patented technology has risen as a key solution to fabricate the next generation of devices. |
