According to a report by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), there have been 587 patents filed since 2005 on face-recognition technologies; 68 patents in 2005, 141 in 2007, 150 in 2009, etc. Face-recognition technologies have been limited in an application field by problems posed by lighting, which caused them to be less prevalent than fingerprint-recognition technologies. However, the recent release of 3D face-recognition technologies among other innovative technologies have opened up new fields for face-recognition technologies such as automatic door-lock, electronic passports, automatic ATM machines, Smartphone applications, etc. Samsung Electronics filed 9.2% of the patents on face-recognition technologies with Samsung Digital Imaging constituting 8.0%, ETRI 5.1%, Samsung Techwin 4.4%, and LG Electronics 4.1%, allowing large Korean companies to constitute 41.6% of the patents. Mid-sized and small engineering firms of Korea have filed 28.3% of these patents. As for technologies, matching-recognition technologies were most prevalent (28.3%) with system formation technologies (27.4%), characteristic-extraction technologies (16.9%), face detection technologies (16.0%), and preprocessing technologies (11.4%). |
