According to a statement by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), there has been a great increase in the number of patent applications filed in the last five years involving smartphone-related technologies. This number has increased from 185 patents in 2007 to 369 in 2008 and 491 in 2009. Application-related technologies constituted 62.9% of this number, hardware field 22.5%, and interface field 8.5%. Furthermore, a display technology field constituted 4.7% and platform technologies 1.4%. Application-related technologies nearly tripled in the last three years going from 106 patents in 2007 to 300 patents in 2009. The reason behind this increase is creation of new services utilizing smartphones in diverse areas such as a stock exchange service and a positioning information-based service. As for applicants, Apple filed 13% of the patents, followed by Google with 10%, Sony Ericsson with 5%, and Microsoft with 3%. Korean companies including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and small and medium-sized firms comprised 64%. There has also been a rise in the number of patent applications filed by individuals, which went from 11 patent applications in 2007 to 61 patent applications last year. This indicates the potentials of one-person companies. A KIPO spokesperson explained that smartphones will bring about many changes in our ways of life. During the first quarter of this year, 54.7 million smartphones have been sold with Nokia¡¯s sale comprising 39.3%, RIM 19.4%, Apple 16.1%, HTC 4.8%, and Motorola 4.2% of the market share. |
