While Google¡¯s operating system (OS) Android-based smart phones have appeared as new dominant players in a Korea¡¯s cellular phone market, it has been found that Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom have monopolized the Korean trademarks on ¡®Android¡¯ causing worries for the industry.
According to a source on 16th of March, Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom have contracted with a local content manufacturer called T-PLEX to use ¡®Android¡¯ for their upcoming products.
While Samsung has the right to use the trademark on devices, SK Telecom has the right to use it on mobile services.
Their largest competitors LG Electronics and KT are now put at a dilemma since they were planning on releasing their Android-based phones this year.
Once they learned of the deal, they had to change their model names to ¡®Andro-1.¡¯
An LG spokesperson explained that they have come to the conclusion that Andro-1 would be a better name and that it had nothing to do with the recent deal between Samsung and SK Telecom with T-PLEX.
