The Korean government will start supporting the design and release of ¡®Super Patents¡¯ in response to patent trolls that make a living through international patent suits. Hae-do Kim, R&D innovation team leader of National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), categorized patents into two types and explained that the government will select and support 46 super patents based on the R&D results. For type A where patent design and registration are supported based on PCT registration, 30 patents will be selected this year and KRW 15 million will be provided. The duration of financial support is 1 year. Furthermore, for type B where registration is supported for PCT-designated countries and individual countries, 15 patents will be selected this year and KRW 40 million will be provided for 3 years. NRF has acquired KRW 135 billion as budget for supporting Super Patents. Whether the budget will be increased will be decided after observing the progress next year. NRF will also establish a systematic supporting system for the seeds of the technologies that are deemed to have potential industrial merit from research results (ideas, dissertations, patents, etc.) produced by universities and other research institutes. Mr. Kim explained that NRF is ¡°planning on discovering and supporting 231 seeds,¡± and that ¡°more support is necessary for the seed incubation process to establish a systematic system for discovering seeds and transforming them into patents.¡± |
