Date 2010-01-29 Visit 6681

According to an announcement made by Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) on 20th January, revenues made through PCT international research that were mere $200 thousand in 2006 jumped to $10 million last year, showing a rapid growth of nearly 50 times the initial revenue in 4 years.

It is three times the revenue made in 2008, which was $3 million. The number of research cases increased accordingly from 735 in 2006, 2,853 in 2007, 11,653 in 2008, and 13,978 cases in 2009.

Many research cases were requested by global information technology firms, such as Microsoft, 3M, and HP. Microsoft has made a total of 2,233 cases of PCT international research requests to KIPO since 2006.

3M has made a total of 1,424 requests, HP 1,245 requests, Intel 677 requests, Motorola 527 requests, showing a rise in requests made by American firms.

Yahoo, Google, and GM have also recently been making requests.

The reason to the recent increase in requests made to KIPO is because they are known for providing excellent research services at a relatively low cost ($1,092 per case while USPTO charges $2,080 per case).

The service also provides search not only in English but also in Korean and Japanese.
