IBM was awarded 4,914 patents in the U.S. last year, topping the U.S. patent list for the 17th year, according to the IFI Patent Intelligence, the U.S. based patent information provider, on January 12.
Samsung Electronics took the second place while Microsoft came after with winning 2,906 patents.

"We invest $6 billion annually in research and development and continue to invent new patents in order to advance business strategies and ability to serve our customers," Christopher Andrews, IBM¡¯s spokesman said.
IBM published a journal listing details of its 4,000 inventions last year in a bid to prevent infringement by other companies and to save time in a patent acquiring procedure.
