Eastman Kodak Co. won a key decision in its efforts to block imports of mobile phones with digital cameras made by Samsung Electronics Co.
A judge with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington Thursday said that Samsung infringed two Kodak patents. His decision is subject to review by the full six- member commission.
The patents relate to ways to capture, compress and store digital images, and a method of previewing moving images. Kodak settled a similar dispute this month with LG Electronics Inc. for undisclosed terms. Rochester, New York-based Kodak said it was pleased with the judge`s findings.
"We are gratified that the judge recognized the validity and infringement of the digital camera patents at issue," David Lanzillo, a company spokesman, said today in an e-mail. "As we`ve said many times before, we have invested hundreds of millions of dollars creating this technology and we have an obligation to our shareholders and other licensees to protect that investment."
Should the commission decide that Suwon, Korea-based Samsung products violated Kodak`s patent rights, it has the authority to ban imports of the phones. Samsung has a pending ITC complaint against Kodak and a judge is scheduled to issue his findings in that case Jan. 24. Kim Titus, a spokesman for Samsung, said the company isn`t issuing a statement. |
