Subject : Korea Filed 14% of All International Patent Applications Regarding Mobile Communication Technology

It is reported that Korea and Japan have filed nearly half of the international patent applications regarding mobile communication technology.
Also, employment created by the mobile communication technology industry of Korea totaled about 300,000 jobs, according to the report.
The Global System for Mobile communications Association (GSMA), which represents the interests of the worldwide mobile communications industry, published a ¡®Asia Pacific Mobile Industry Observatory¡¯ white paper. According to the white paper, the number of international patent applications regarding the mobile communication technology filed by Korea occupied 14% of the whole international patent applications.
In addition, Japan occupied 36%, and thus half of the international patent applications were filed by Asia-Pacific, specifically, by Korea and Japan.
According to the white paper, the mobile communication technology also contributed to creating jobs directly and indirectly; the number of people hired in this field in Korea was about 277,000, which is far more than those of hired in Australia (106,000), New Zealand (19,000), Hong Kong (37,000), or Singapore (40,000).
Also, location-based service (LBS) by SK Telecom of Korea was reckoned as an innovative service.
An official of GSMA said, ¡°Services such as the ¡®Find Pals¡¯ function, the service for finding the position of children, the emergency call service for older people, or the service for operating vending machines using wireless communication network are regarded as highly innovative in developed countries.¡±
The GSMA is planning to distribute main contents of the white paper this month to press and stock companies in various countries.
