Subject : Strong Competition for Technology Development to Preoccupy OLED Market

Companies strongly compete with each other to develop technology for applying an organic light emitting diode (OLED) to TVs and cellular phones.

As of October 5, according to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the number of patents applications regarding OLED equipments has increased from an initial 4 applied cases in 1998 to a current total of 707 applied cases.

Regarding the applicants, large companies (47.0%) are followed by medium (mid-sized) and small companies (29.6%), foreigners (17.8%), individuals (4%), and public research institutes (0.8%). Regarding the technologies applied for, vapor deposition equipments (35.5%) are followed by masks (26.7%), evaporation sources (21.8%), and laser transfer (4.7%).

Unlike a liquid crystal display (LCD), an OLED includes a self-light emitting organic material and thus is regarded as a next generation display that can operate at low power while displaying high image quality. However, due to technical restrictions wherein OLED technology can be applied only to small display products such as mobile phones less than 3 inches long, the number of patent applications regarding OLED technology is not great. Actually, it was found that from among the total number of domestic patent applications, those regarding large-area OLED equipments number 99 cases, i.e., only 14% of the total applications.

An ultimate goal of OLED technology is to be applied to large-sized TVs. An international market research company, Display Search, expects that the OLED TV market will grow from a current scale of $2 million to about $2.3 billion in 2016.
