A patent expert who was dispatched to a university found a technology worth KRW 600 billions (USD 461 millions) that would otherwise have been remained in a research laboratory.
The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and the Korean Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) announced that the patent expert dispatched to Wonkwang University discovered a patent relating to bone restoration developed by the dental college of the university, and found that the potential market of the patent would be worth about KRW billions (USD 461 millions) by 2015.
Advisor Youngho LEE dispatched to Wonkwang University discovered the patent during a consultation with professor Jun LEE of Wonkwang University regarding the technology of a ¡°customized fibrin block scaffold¡± developed by a laboratory led by the professor LEE. The patent relates to a method and apparatus for restoring jaws of patients damaged by an external force through a surgery such as an implant, and has been applied in Korea and overseas.
According to the consultation of Techran Co., Ltd., a consulting firm participating in this project, Wonkwang University is planning to establish a research laboratory and a company for commercialization of the technology this year.
A director Youngmin KIM of the Industrial Property Policy Bureau of the KIPO said that ¡°the KIPO will provide universities with general support from finding promising technologies to commercializing them through creating outstanding patents¡± and ¡°the KIPO will work together with Innovation Capitals to assist universities in establishing technology holding companies and incubating promising ideas¡±.
