The Korea Food Research Institute will open a portal site about the country`s food to block foreign groups claiming patent rights of food methods that originate in Korea, it said in an emailed statement yesterday.

A number of disputes between developing countries and global companies have been reported, with corporations claiming patent rights of items produced using traditional methods, which are not registered as intellectual property by an international organization.

The website (www.tradifood.net) will offer about 3,500 cooking techniques, information on nutrition, historical and cultural background, and modernization of Korean traditional food, the state-funded institute said.

The database will help the country`s food and culture gain international recognition, particularly from the World Intellectual Property Organization, the institute said.
