Date 2009-06-30 Visit 5793

Patent management led by Samsung Electronics¡¯ Vice Chairman and CEO Lee Yoon-Woo is finally seeing great results. Experts say that it eliminated a significant obstacle to Samsung Electronics¡¯ business by concluding patent cross licenses with different companies.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Toshiba Corp. have extended their patent cross licensing deal for NAND memories.
According to EE times, specific details regarding the licenses held by both companies will be shared and nothing has been stated regarding the duration of the latest cooperative arrangement.
Samsung is the world¡¯s largest NAND memory producer, with an estimated 42 percent of the market. Toshiba is the second largest NAND memory manufacturer with a share of 29.3 percent. Hynix Semiconductor Co. is ranked third, with a 12.3 percent share of the global market.
In 2007, Samsung Electronics agreed to share its licenses for integrated OneNAND and Flex-OneNAND chips with Toshiba in exchange for the Japanese company allowing use of technology related to single-package LBA-NAND and mobiLBA-NAND chips.
Samsung Electronics is said to be paying an estimate of $350 million per year in royalties to SanDisk for its patented technology.
