According to a report made by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP) and Samsung Economic Research Institute (SERI), the quality of R&D efficiency of South Korea ranked 16th out of 19 countries subject to the research.
On the other hand, R&D quantity of South Korea ranked 9th out of 19 countries.
According to data provided by SERI, the quantitative efficiency of Korean R&D was 0.86 compared to 1 of United States.
However, the qualitative efficiency of Korean R&D was a meager 0.25.
This is because Korean firms have been focusing on the number of patents registered rather than concentrating on the quality of the registered patents.
SERI asserted that in order to enhance our R&D performance, national research capacity must be strengthened, a Korean R&D system developed, utilization of basic research results enhanced, and global search abilities generated through open innovation. |
