DPI R&D Center (www.dpi.co.kr) announced on 3 January 2003 that they obtained a U.S. patent for an ED (electric deposition) coating paint which is lead free and environment friendly.

The company stated that they are the first Korean paint company to obtain a patent for the technology in the U.S. The ED coating paint technology developed by DPI is characteristic in that the paint does not include any lead.

Since a regulation to restrict lead in the ED coating paint for an automobile will be enforced from the latter half of this year, this technology can meet the needs of this change. An individual in connection with the company said, "While other paint companies are preparing importation of technologies, we can save royalties and contribute to the improvement of profit growth".

"Companies are focusing more on research and development, and are becoming more aggressive in protecting intellectual properties," Kim Gwang-lim, head of the agency, said.

KIPO's status for its accession to the Madrid Protocol 1989

With the cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, KIPO, on January 10, 2003, submitted documents related to its accession to the Madrid Protocol to WIPO. At the same time, KIPO has been busy setting up its internal work flow procedure, recruiting staff and developing its computer system.

With the Madrid Protocol 1989 taking effect on April 10, 2003, KIPO will soon begin receiving application based on the Madrid Protocol.
