Seoul National University (SNU) announced that they created the world’s first transgenic fluorescent dog ‘Ruppy.’
A SNU team led by Byeong-Chun Lee created Ruppy, who with stem-cell researcher Woo Suk Hwang was part of the scientific effort that in 2005 created Snuppy, the first cloned dog.
The cloned beagle glow in the dark because they have been created to have genetic information from sea anemones, a breakthrough scientists hope will help in the study of human diseases.
The pups produce a protein that glows under ultraviolet light, New Scientist magazine reported.
The SNU researchers created the dog by cloning and inserting cells that express a red fluorescent gene produced by sea anemones, hoping that it will lead to transgenic dog models of human diseases.
The patent for the technology used for cloning Ruppy has been filed.
Professor Lee stated that “it has been proven that production of dogs of diverse genes is possible and that it can be used to contribute to the growth of biomedical research.
” Greg Barsh, a Stanford University geneticist called the development an “important accomplishment,” according to the magazine. |
